Population

The Portland-South Portland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 327,556 in 1970 to 514,098 in 2010. That was an increase of 56.9 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 13,868 in 1970 to 22,558 in 2010. That was an increase of 62.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 4.2 percent to 4.4 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 56.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in the first period, replaced by NDM in the next two periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the main source of added population in the most recent period.
